The future of Birmingham-Southern College

Most Birmingham leaders don't agree with Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer's decision to deny Birmingham-Southern College's request for a loan.

That's one of the takeaways from this month's Power Poll, which asked readers to sound off about the future of the private liberal arts college.

The school had previously requested stopgap funding through the new Alabama Distressed Institutions of Higher Education Revolving Loan Program, but Boozer rejected the school's application — triggering a lawsuit from the schiool that was recently dismissed by a judge. Three-quarters of respondents in the Birmingham Power Poll disagreed with Boozer's decision to reject the funding request.

Additionally, 76% of respondents said they would support legislative efforts to amend the Distressed Institutions of Higher Learning Revolving Loan Fund Act to ensure Birmingham-Southern College could receive funding through the program.

Power Poll respondents also made it clear BSC enjoys widespread support in the metro area.

More than half of respondents said the college is extremely important to metro Birmingham.

Looking forward, BSC leaders have said they are confident they will be able to complete the spring semester, according to WBRC FOX6.
