Magic City leaders have New Orleans on their minds — at least when it comes to the most-wanted nonstop destination from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

That was the takeaway from the most-recent Power Poll Birmingham, which explored the future of BHM airport.

More than one-third of Birmingham leaders (35%) said New Orleans was their most-coveted domestic destination for nonstop service.

Southwest previously operated a flight to New Orleans from BHM until 2013.

San Francisco was second-most at 16%.

Looking abroad, 60% of respondents said Europe is their top choice for an international flight — although the evolving economics of the data-driven airline industry have made it challenging for airports of Birmingham’s size to land them.

When asked about their most-wanted airline, JetBlue (42%) was the runaway winner.

Frontier Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier that operated in Birmingham for a short time, came in second.

A significant portion of local leaders (44%) say the comfort of BHM’s terminal is the airport’s strongest asset, while the same percentage (44%) say the cost of flights is what’s most in need of improvement at the airport.

About Power Poll: Power Poll asks questions of the most powerful, influential people in U.S. cities. It is not a scientific survey. But because the people responding to the surveys comprise the leadership structure of their cities, the results afford a fascinating glimpse into the thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of those in a position to make change. Power Poll is distinctly nonpartisan.
