Mark Russell was named executive editor of The Commercial Appeal in 2017 after a lifetime of jobs at newspapers across the country. At the time of his appointment in Memphis, Russell had been also serving as interim executive editor and head of opinion/engagement for the USA TODAY NETWORK—Tennessee. Russell first came to work at the Commercial Appeal in 2013 as managing editor. Prior to that, he was managing editor and executive editor of The Orlando Sentinel. Under his leadership, the Sentinel was a Pulitzer finalist in 2913 for coverage of the hazing death of a band member of the Florida A&M University Marching 100. Previously, Russell held editing positions at The Boston Globe and The Plain Dealer in Cleveland. He was also a reporter at The Wall Street Journal.
