Birmingham leaders are bullish about the potential for the upcoming World Games in the Magic City — and the majority of them are planning to attend the event.

That’s the biggest takeaway from the latest Power Poll Birmingham, which is a monthly poll of local leaders.

Power Poll Birmingham is not a scientific poll, but does offer a window into the perspectives of influential Birmingham community and business leaders.

The World Games were awarded to Birmingham in 2015, and the global sporting event will bring thousands of athletes from around the world from July 7 to July 17 at sites around the region — the culmination of years of planning.

Nearly half of respondents in the Birmingham Power Poll said they planned to attend at least three events during the World Games. Only 17% said they didn’t plan to attend a World Games event in some capacity.

Additionally, 45% of respondents said their business or organization was taking steps to capitalize on the World Games being in the Magic City.

Several heavy hitters from Birmingham’s corporate community have signed on as major sponsors for the event, while representatives from numerous others are volunteering or providing resources.

Looking ahead, 90% of Power Poll respondents believe hosting the World Games will have a positive long-term effect on Birmingham’s economy.

About Power Poll: Power Poll asks questions of the most powerful, influential people in U.S. cities. It is not a scientific survey. But because the people responding to the surveys comprise the leadership structure of their cities, the results afford a fascinating glimpse into the thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of those in a position to make change. Power Poll is distinctly nonpartisan.
