Magic City leaders sound off on their favorite local sports teams
There’s a pretty clear winner when it comes to influential Birmingham leaders’ favorite pro sports team, but there’s a lot more debate when it comes to their favorite sports venue and event.
That’s the takeaway from the latest Birmingham Power Poll, which surveyed local leaders about the Magic City’s sports scene at a robust moment in Birmingham’s sports history — with active teams in all five major league sports, several new facilities and recent developments like Major League Baseball’s announcement that historic Rickwood Field will host the Field of Dreams game.
The Birmingham Barons secured the majority of the vote (51%) for respondents’ favorite pro team, outdistancing the surging Legion FC (21%) and the Birmingham Stallions (15%).
Protective Stadium, the home of the Legion and the Stallions, earned the most votes (36%) for favorite local sports venue — nipping Regions Field (28%).
The vote was even closer for favorite sports event, with the SEC Baseball Tournament (24%) edging Regions Tradition (18%), the Magic City Classic (15%) and the Rickwood Classic (11%).
